PARENTING TIPS FOR A SINGLE MOM: EMBRACING ITS JOYS AND CHALLENGES

There isn’t a more special person, there isn’t a more special feeling than that of being a mother. Mother, it isn’t just a simple word, it’s an emotion, it’s an existence, it’s a mini world in its own, one we are so used to that we don’t even realize what it actually takes to be a mother. Being a mother is not easy, there are so many challenges motherhood poses on a daily basis. What makes it even more difficult is when you are doing this alone. In today’s day and age there are more and more single moms

navigating their lives along with their child’s and doing the best they can. Parenting tips for a single mom.

Being a single mom myself, I know the ups and downs I face in raising my son. No two days are alike, no two moments are alike. Every day is a learning curve and a constant endeavor to be the best parent you can. The most important yet the most difficult thing for single moms is devoting time to their child. If you’re a single mother, work would be something that would take up a lot of your time, and you wouldn’t be at liberty to just take off days and spend all your time with your baby, believe me I go through this so often, with guilt eating me from inside. But what I have realized it, it doesn’t matter how many hours you give to your baby, what really matters is the quality of time spent together.

So here I am sharing some of the most common challenges I face with my son, and some solutions for the same which work at times, and at times they don’t, but we got to keep trying. Hope these work for you moms!

Put your phone away when with your child

There will be that one phone call you cannot avoid, there will always be a work email which needs immediate attention, and there might be many other things which would seem imminent as soon as you put your device away. Believe me moms, everything can wait. When you do give your child time, ensure he/she has your undivided attention. This way even if you don’t spend hours together, they will feel satiated with even 30 minutes of your focused attention.

Take them out to play areas

Cannot leave work and cannot leave your child with someone to be watched over either? Play Areas to the rescue. There are more and more play areas opening up for babies with cafes attached to them, where you can take your child and let them play, while you can sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee, or even continue working while your child is stimulated without your constant attention.

Enrol them in hobby classes

It is rightly said that start them young. Put your child in a music class, a sports class, art class, or whatever they might be interested in. It’s important to let them dabble in everything before you can actually figure what they like best. If you are unable to take them to classes, you can always look for instructors or teachers who would come home for classes.

Have a Night Time Routine

Take out time for your child at bedtime. That is one of the most important and cherished times between a mom and her baby. Read a book, play a game in bed, sing him or her sleep. The better your baby will sleep, the more time you will get to be productive.

Create traditions

A weekly movie night, a drive for ice cream over the weekend or maybe Sunday morning pancakes. Set your own traditions with your child and make sure to follow them. This will help you strengthen your bond and spend quality time with your little one.

Sing Along & Dance

Crank up some tunes and have a silly dance party! Put on your kid’s favourite music or nursery rhymes and just dance like nobody’s watching. It’s fun for both the mom and the baby, and what’s best is you can do this an hour before bed time to burn their energy so that they can go to bed easy ;)

Daily Chores

Involve your baby in your daily routines whenever possible. Let them "help" you fold laundry, cook dinner, or clean the house. This fosters a sense of connection and helps them develop important skills.

Being a single mom presents unique challenges, but they don't have to hinder your effectiveness as a parent. I hope these strategies will help and make life a little easier on you. Always remember, you are doing the best you can!
